Summer intensives are often where dancers make their biggest leaps. Long days in the studio, new teachers, unfamiliar styles renew training as exciting, exhausting, and completely worth it. But nothing derails a great week faster than realizing you left something important at home. Whether it’s your first intensive or your fifth, use this summer dance intensive packing list to show up prepared, comfortable, and ready to dance from day one.

Start With the Right Dance Shoes

Your shoes are the one thing you can’t improvise, so pack them first. Most intensives cover more than one genre in a single day, so add a pair for every style on your schedule to your dance intensive packing list:

  • Ballet shoes: Your everyday essential. Pack a backup pair if yours are worn.
  • Pointe shoes: Or pointe-track dancers, bring both a broken-in pair and a fresh pair, plus your toe pads, spacers, and sewing kit.
  • Jazz shoes: Slip-on or lace-up, depending on your preference.
  • Tap shoes: If tap is on the timetable, don’t count on borrowing a pair.
  • Character shoes: Often needed for musical theatre or variation classes.

A quick tip: label every pair with your name. In a room full of dancers, identical black jazz shoes go missing fast.

Pack Enough Dancewear for the Full Week

Intensives mean sweat, and lots of it. Plan for at least one fresh set of dancewear per day, and you’ll be glad you did by day three.

  • Leotards: Pack five to seven so you’re never scrambling to do laundry.
  • Tights: Bring several pairs, including convertible tights so you can adjust for barre, pointe, or bare feet. Runs happen, so pack extras.
  • Warm-ups: Leg warmers, a wrap sweater, or shorts for keeping muscles warm before and between classes.
  • A cover-up: Something easy to throw on for lunch breaks or the walk home.

Layering is your friend. Studios swing between chilly morning air conditioning and full-blast afternoon heat, and warm muscles are less injury-prone.

Choose a Dance Bag That Does the Work

A proper dance bag keeps your gear organized so you’re not digging through a pile before every class. Look for one with separate compartments, ideally a vented section for shoes, a spot for a water bottle, and a pocket for small essentials. A roomy duffel or backpack style works best for full-day intensives, since you’ll be carrying everything with you rather than leaving it in a locker.

Body Care and Recovery Essentials

Full days of dancing take a toll, and recovery is part of the training. Tuck these into your bag:

  • Blister care: Bandages, athletic tape, and moleskin for hotspots.
  • A foam roller or massage ball: Small enough to bring, invaluable for tired legs.
  • A big water bottle: Hydration is non-negotiable in a hot studio.
  • Healthy snacks: Trail mix, fruit, or protein bars to power through back-to-back classes.
  • Hair supplies: A brush, gel, extra elastics, and plenty of bobby pins for secure buns.

Don’t Forget the Little Things

Don’t leave these off your dance intensive packing list! These small items are the ones dancers forget most often:

  • Deodorant and a small towel
  • Sunscreen for the walk to and from the studio
  • A light jacket for cool mornings
  • Any personal medications
  • A phone charger and headphones

Bring a Notebook and an Open Mind

An intensive is a chance to absorb corrections from teachers you may only work with once. Pack a small notebook to jot down feedback, combinations, choreography notes and even personal advice that stuck with you at the end of each day. You’ll be surprised how much you retain when you write it down and how helpful those notes are once you’re back at your home studio.

Stock Up & Pack Smart!

The best packing strategy is simple: lay everything out flat the night before, check it against this list, and repack your bag each evening so you’re never rushing in the morning. Arriving organized lets you focus on what actually matters.
